Don't Fondle the Hammer.

Don't Fondle the Hammer.

I love the "don't fondle the hammer." Focus on the customer and not the channel.

Antiquated thinking is still being pushed that is one-direction and tries to drive a corporate message rather than listen and participate.

It's simply naive to think that a "communication campaign" with a beginning and an end can successfully work if your customer doesn't think of your brand/product/service in a way that makes them want to have a direct conversation with you.

Here is a brief video of Jeremiah Owyang, of the Altimer Group, discussing his new rules.

Patient Communities, Twitter Portals and the Dosie Awards

Patient Communities, Twitter Portals and the Dosie Awards

While we're at it, here's SHAMELESS PLUG ALERT NUMBER 2 for today.

There are a number of people within the health care and social media spheres that I've come to respect for their knowledge, passion and drive for superior interactive marketing. I've never personally met these folks other than following them on Twitter, reading their blogs and in some cases working with them. I do know that I have learned much more than I've ever probably given back. Jonathon Richman at Dose of Digital and Fabio Gratton from Ignite Health both fall into that category.

Kudos to Jonathon for pulling together his inaugural Dosie Awards, which were created to award the best examples of social media in Pharma and health care. He demonstrates real leadership and in a relatively short period of time has attained category thought leadership as well. Just read his 10 Dinosaurs Digital Technology Will Make Extinct post and you'll see what I mean. Heck, read the whole blog, it's full of great insights.

The nominees for the awards were drawn from the Pharma and Healthcare Social Media Wiki you’ve seen on this blog. If a site or program was listed on the Wiki, then it was a nominee. This means there were about 550 nominees, so we had to pare this list down to a set of finalists. You voted for the finalists and we revealed the finalists a few weeks ago. You then voted on the finalists to pick the ultimate winners and now we have them. For the Pharma Company of the Year in Social Media award, a company needed to have at least five entries on the Pharma and Healthcare Social Media Wiki to be nominated.
I've also had the pleasure of speaking extensively with Fabio Gratton on a number of occasions and his passion for building relationships, communities and genuinely helping people is evident. This is not to mention his role and leadership in the FDASM hearings late last year and his industry knowledge. Kudos to him and Ignite Health for being the fuel to some of the activities that won Dosie awards. Here is a link to Pharma Live that gives the rundown on Ignite Health's role.

By the way, I am quoted because I worked with Ignite on a Twitter aggregation portal they developed that won the Bronze Dosie award winning branded patient community, which in turn contributed in part to winning SM company of the year.

Web 3.0: What Does it Mean for Rx/Dx?

Just when folks in Rx/Dx are getting used to Web 2.0, the semantic Web is quickly becoming very real. The mind shift to understanding that this seismic change is underway, but I'm pretty sure most people can't get their head around the semantic Web just yet.

Why Greece is a Tragedy for Connected Healthcare

Why Greece is a Tragedy for Connected Healthcare

If there is one thing I have learned over the last 8 years of traveling internationally, it is that news that occurs in the US is played around the world. More often than not it's presented with more of an objective eye. However, news that occurs in Europe or elsewhere doesn't always get the same attention here.

However, it's been hard to avoid the news regarding the economic situation in Greece. Here is a timeline of events and a nice summary of the situation here.

The macro trend that is not mentioned but will surely occur is that budgets all across the EU will tighten now and into the foreseeable future and that will impact health care delivery and innovative pilots downstream. You see, the EU recognized the value of tele-health to reduce cost and improve health outcomes and have been driving many pilots and opportunities in Spain and elsewhere.

But with the belt tightening, there will be a squeeze on budgets across all countries and health care will suffer the result as reimbursement gets cut, pilots get cut and countries retrench to weather the economic storm.

That is bad for everyone, bad for health care and bad for connected health. Greece unwittingly just set the connected health movement in Europe back years. The silver lining is that products and product adoption have lagged and this could buy the necessary time for real product solutions to come together rather than one-off products.

All in all, it reinforces my belief that connected health is a marathon and that the real change is occurring on the patient side, which incidentally continues to grow.

Digital Marketing in Pharma: A Review

Digital Marketing in Pharma: A Review

I came across two separate compilations of digital pharma. There has been definite progress, but there is also room to grow and grow more quickly. Overall, I think there is a need to shed some of the fear and move faster.

You can avoid much of the regulatory concern if you keep it about the consumer and provide education and value versus your product.

Using Social Media for B2B

Using Social Media for B2B

The Internet and social media seems to dominate consumer discussion, but it also applies to B2B in the same ways as you would a consumer.

It should be a component of an integrated marketing strategy.

Connected Health: What's Next?

Connected Health: What's Next?

Paul Williamson, a consultant from Cambridge Consultants and a smart guy I've had the pleasure of working with, has a nice post and summary on connected health and what the next steps might be for Continua Health Alliance.

The second step is to stimulate adoption of the standards in the mobile phone sector. With its selection of Bluetooth, Continua paved the way for a wide range of health and fitness services to be offered via mobile devices, and in 2010 we should see the first handsets that will enable developers to launch new health services.
Beyond the immediate product launches, the Continua Health Alliance is also generating extensions to its guidelines to address high volume consumer products.  These extensions exploit the introduction of Bluetooth Low Energy, and ZigBee to address in-home networks for independent living.
Challenges and pitfalls - Confusing the consumer
In its quest for interoperability Continua offered the hope that any product with a Continua Certified logo would be able to communicate with any other Continua Certified product. It is becoming increasingly clear that this wont be the case. Even with the version one guidelines not all devices support both wired and wireless connection, so you would at least need to look for the Bluetooth and USB logos as well. Then the list of device types began to grow so a device certified today could not support all future device types. With the introduction of an increasing number of technologies (e.g ZigBee) this picture is getting more confusing.
Paul asks some valid questions and offers a few suggestions. The most important is the adoption of the tools and technologies. He questions how the companies that develop the tools will get paid--good question. Adoption (and payment) remains the biggest obstacle to success.

Social Media for B2B

Social Media for B2B

Good little video on Social Media for B2B. Reinforces some of the key tenets of social media. I like that the narrator states up front that social media is a new channel but it is not the only channel.

1. It's not about what you say about your brand it's what your customers tell each other about your brand.

2. The first place people go for research is online. Period. Are you where they look? Are you there providing value?

3. You need to provide content and information (preferably in a dynamic format) your customers want. That applies whether your targeting consumers or channel partners. The right info at the right time.

4. Social is growing fast in B2B. Yes, it's a communication channel.
