The Patient Uprising: Health 2.0 Product Design Contest

In a previous post, I said the following about the promise of Health 2.0
I am confident that real change is happening and will continue to come from the consumers who are empowered and are talking and sharing and that no company, insurer or doctor has direct influence over more than is absolutely necessary to either write the prescription or pay the bill. Common bonds and information is spreading and building entire networks of people, who are banding together across all conditions and disease states to share, learn and support each other in their health. The internet allows that connection and it is real, powerful, empowering and often more informative than any doctor can provide in a 10 minute visit.

 I referenced Amy Tenderich, a leading Health 2.0 patient advocate and her design competition.

Amy Tenderich of Diabetes Mine is on the leading edge of this in her role as a leading Health 2.0 expert and Patient Opinion Leader for the diabetes community. The community and those on the periphery look to her and respect what she has to say. In some cases, I believe that she is more trusted to her readers than a doctor. She also recognized very early on in the Health 2.0 movement and that she could have a voice and an impact. She started a design contest that has created energy and movement in thehttp://www.blogger.com/post-create.g?blogID=3880580380578785751 diabetes blogosphere while also bringing good consumer product design to medical devices.
Well, Amy is at it again and she's upped the ante this year. There is a total of $7K $23K in prize money, an opportunity to pitch a VC on your concept and the ability to tap into experts (IDEO) to help with the commercialization. For full details go here

This epitomizes the shift that I think is occurring and this is literally the tip of the iceberg.

Combine the need for personalization, Health 2.0 advocacy, the semantic web and enabling technologies such Open Social, Google Friend Connect and Facebook Connect and crowd sourcing capabilities and it is easily within sight that communities can and will collectively develop ideas, use cases, preferred specifications and even designs that would serve as next generation products that would meet the exact needs of the communities.

Here is a nice social media framework from Ross Dawson. I think it covers the bases and the hard part is the right hand portion--establishing the listening and overall governance processes. You must establish this before you can more on to engagement and conversation--particularly if you are in the Rx/Dx space.

Quite frankly, I'm not sure why this surprises me, but it surprises me. Newspaper spending was more than Internet for Rx companies in 2009. Huh?

Newspaper ads increased by 11 percent, to $162.6 million, and radio ads jumped by 112 percent, to $46.3 million. Spending on Internet ads, which has doubled over the last five years, hit $117.4 million, up 31 percent, while $7.6 million was spent on outdoor ads such as billboards.
Overall, spending is up but the upward trend in spending doesn't match the effectiveness or the speed at which consumers and HCPs are moving online.

This just tells me that there is an old guard of marketing decision makers--agencies and Rx companies alike, that will keep going to the proverbial well on traditional channels because it is comfy and familiar and not the new and targeted.

Spending stats like this just reinforce to me that in the Rx/Dx industries that change comes slowly and there is still work to do for to prove out Interactive and social media.
