Digital Strategy: Consumers call doctor first for adverse reactions, get prescription info from the pharmacy

Woody Allen has the famous quote, "80% of success is showing up." For digital marketers, you have to have your information in the right spot at the right time to be successful. That means having a multi-online channel approach and being consistent. You are being consistent, right? You're not so fixated on metrics and constant tweaking that you're missing the boat on just being there, right?

Consistency is key and having an understanding of where people go to get what type of information is a key to success. Search engines are the first place to be.

For example, Search Engine Optimization is important, but I know that search engines have stacked the deck against corporations that present disease related information. Many people would go pay a SEO firm to optimize their pages, revise their meta tags, etc.

I, on the other hand, understand that this is a game you can't win. The search engine algorithms that determine this are complex and nobody has this figured out. If you're not selling direct the game is to really drive awareness, prompt an action further.

I do know engines place high priority on social content, 3rd party organization and recently on their own content. So why would you pay someone to fix something that can't be fixed? So what do I suggest instead? Have a paid plan and make it as targeted as you can to your business and the customer you want. Make sure you're showing up as often as your budget allows (60-70% share of voice).

As a secondary action, add a blog or as I would prefer to say in the regulated world a' content aggregator' specific to the disease state and start adding to the conversation. That will help your SEO results over time and you're ensuring that you're there from a PPC perspective.

Check out the data from Health Central and ask yourself what you're doing to make sure you're showing up.

Doing The Expected vs. The Amazing

Doing The Expected vs. The Amazing

A good thought from Seth Godin via CMO.com.

As a marketer have you slipped into doing the normal and routine? Or do you to do something exceptional?

For digital marketers, are you running as fast you can? Are you doing what's easy, or what is best to make meaningful connections and engage? Are you making interactions better? Are you educating?

Reminds me of a favorite saying, "if you do what you've always done you'll get what you've always got."

Be different, be creative. Provide value.
The Social Media Doh! Moment

The Social Media Doh! Moment

I spend a good amount of my time reading, learning and in my personal life practicing social media. I have also spent a good amount of time explaining my definition of social media to friends, colleagues, etc. I have found that almost all presentations you find, blog posts, article in MSM attempt to explain social media in the context of what it means as a "revolutionary" change in how people interact and how it is going to turn the world of marketing upside down. Explaining that communication is now bi-directional and "It's a conversation" can be met with furrowed eyebrows. Usually what can ensue is an explanation of your explanation that really doesn't answer the original question.
That is all fine and dandy but when explaining it to marketing people in Rx/Dx where change is slow and the tried and true is safer than something new social media, which is the new kid on the marketing block can get a stunned look and something like, "big ships don't turn easily" or "that's boiling the ocean" or "that's eating the elephant in one bite." All of that may be true if you understand that you just explained to someone that social media is going to change the world and marketing as we know it.
Instead of explaining how the proverbial watch is made, why not just explain what time it is? How about explaining social media as a new outlet to send your marketing message? How about explaining that you want to go fishing where the fish are? Or strategy is aligning your message with your customers interests. Sure, you may believe it will change the world of marketing and I personally do, but isn't easier to explain something in bite sized way?
Wrap it up as a strategic initiative that puts you message where people are spending more of their time, which is online and I bet you'll get more heads nodding.

Speaking of revolutions. I like the video, but let's try to tone down the hype a bit.

Why is there so much really bad marketing out there?

This presentation from Rich Meyer is self-explanatory and spot on. I can't figure out why many marketers who are consumers too can't separate their own behavior from the marketing activities they develop during the day time.

I like to read blogs focused on leadership and I like to be reminded daily of small principles that can have a big difference. Here is another regular read from Bret Simmons.

Leadership “Lessons” from Undercover Boss: Episode 2

I have been able to watch bits and pieces of this show on CBS, and I like the approach--quite a bit. Leadership is all around us and its absence becomes very evident. It's great to see leadership, different perspectives and lessons that can be applied everyday.

It can be tough work because the easy road, can be so easy to take; but in the end it is well worth it to step up. It makes you feel better, it makes those around you feel good and in the end you leave a positive "wake" behind you.

check out the post from the blog Great Leadership, by Dan McCarthy. He's one of my frequent reads.

Why Steve Jobs doesn’t listen to customers

As follow-up to my post last week about Steve Jobs, here is a brief article about Steve Jobs from the site, Customer Think. I think the quote from Henry Ford is the most apropos. Again, Jobs has changed entire industries and if he listened to stated desires versus unstated needs we'd probably think the MSFT Zune was a great device.

This will be interesting to see how this may take shape. If you think that it is known that the best, most efficient way to deal with complex sets of information is to make a list (i.e. checklists, cross-checks, methodologies) then you think about the semantic web and you can quickly see how this will be useful to people to aggregate and organize information.

5 Insightful TED Talks on Social Media
Steve Jobs: How to live before you die

Steve Jobs: How to live before you die

I think Steve Jobs is much like a sport hero. He gets too much credit in most cases and probably too much criticism many cases. Since my experience is limited to bad movies, many articles in business pubs and using his products I can say that Apple is in my estimation the single most important product company in the world and that he has brought the most innovation since Ford introduced the Model T. When your products make entire industries do 180 turns you know your on to something. The iPod turned the tables on music and the iPhone changed the game for smart phones. I think it's early yet for the iPad, but he will ultimately get the last laugh. That will have a major impact on business. It will have tremendous impact on health care and it will change how sales reps sell across all industries. I know I'm buying an iPad to replace my home laptop (whenever it dies).

Here is his commencement address at Stanford this past year.

2010 Pharma Social Media Predictions

2010 Pharma Social Media Predictions

There is a very good compilation of Rx/Dx predictions for social media and interactive (mine included) at PharmaLive.

This is the year where social media takes center stage, what are you doing to make sure your ready for the close-up?

I also recommend the site pulled together by Fabio Gratton (@skypen) at FDASM.com

Top 10 Healthcare Social Media Predictions for 2010
Prediction #1: FDA will issue draft guidelines that outline how manufacturers can and should use the Internet and Social Media for FDA-regulated products by the end of 2010, infusing the channel with direction, legitimacy, and explosive activity.
As far as the timing goes, Rick Wion (@rdublife) of Golin Harris predicts FDA healthcare social media guidelines will be “released in December as a holiday present for the pharma industry.” Wendy Blackburn (@wendyblackburn) of inTouch Solutions also predicts “a steady increase in the amount of social media participation by pharma, despite the FDA guidelines not being available until year-end.”
“The first FDA guidelines draft will be shared before the end of 2010,” predicts Spain-based journalist Miguel A. Tovar (@blogaceutics), and “pharma’s participation in the channel will steadily increase.” Angel Gonzalez (@angel189), founder and CEO of Ideagoras, agrees; despite pharma’s “shy attempts to test social [with] extreme caution and fear,” pharma will nonetheless “start embracing what they now consider the unstoppable paradigm.”
But don’t expect an overnight change, stresses Melissa Davies (@MelissaKDavies), research director for Nielsen’s Healthcare practice. “Change will at first seem slow, but looking back at the end of the year will reveal a significant difference.”

Is Social Media the New Mass Media?

Is Social Media the New Mass Media?

Interesting question posed by Chief Marketer. I don't think we're quite there yet, but we're not too far off. Certainly if you think targeted marketing is important you have to question the efficacy of print and TV when your customers are engaged in active dialogue elsewhere. It's the old, "fish where the fish are" analogy.
