P&G Wakes Up and Smells the Coffee.

P&G Wakes Up and Smells the Coffee.

I recall reading an article in Ad Age back about a year ago where the head of digital for leading consumer marketer Proctor & Gamble said that he wasn't sure marketers belonged on Facebook.

That struck me as odd at the time. Odd enough in fact that the article lodged in my memory. As a consumer, on the one hand I agree that marketing can be intrusive. However, as a marketer and a digital marketer, I was surprised that he would go on record in Ad Age with such a strong position. I can see where you would parse your words carefully and indicate that your testing and learning (this is P&G we're talking about after all). But no, the P&G Digital "Guru" (emphasis mine) said in late 2008:

"I have a reaction to that as a consumer advocate and an advertiser," he said. "What in heaven's name made you think you could monetize the real estate in which somebody is breaking up with their girlfriend?"

He further adds.

While it's not a company policy, but rather a personal preference, Mr. McConnell said, "I really don't want to buy any more banner ads on Facebook."
I thought this was a rather stunning admission and incredibly short-sighted. To read the full article go here.

So imagine my surprise when I read today that P&G is embracing Facebook as a part of a big marketing push. AdAge article here.

So, I'll just go ahead and say it, not much has changed with social media as a marketing strategy since late 2008 other than it enjoyed its coming out party in 2009. It was a good idea then and and it's a good idea now.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Measurement is where it will be at in 2010. Organization must be able to provide value to the consumer and join the conversation in an authentic way. For the marketer you have to be authentic and be able to show value within your organization in order to keep social going in your organization.

Question? Will the iSlate Advance the Healthcare Technology Proposition?

Question? Will the iSlate Advance the Healthcare Technology Proposition?

Is 2010 the year mobile and mHealth taking off? Is Apple's Projected launch of their tablet PC iSlate a game changer?

Mmm, let's think for a moment. Thanks to Continua Health Alliance we're moving towards end-to-end solutions with devices talking to data aggregators, which will talk to electronic medical records. Google and Microsoft and others are fighting to store your medical data, Doctor's are being incentivized by President Obama to move to EMRs; and Apple is coming out with a product that is user friendly...easy to use...stuffed with memory...sized to be easily carried and work of a wi-fi network or 3 or 4g network. Umm, I'm gonna say that this helps the cause. In fact, I think it advances the cause very significantly because it fills the gap. The device has been the missing piece for adoption because it's one thing to have a doctor look up prescription data on a PalmPilot or mobile device but how practical is that for real usage--everyday? It's not. However, the iSlate, if it comes as expected, will be a game changer in my estimation. Docs can use that.

In fact I think that will take us from about mile 3 to mile 10 with little to no effort in the marathon of connected health.

Thoughts? Reactions?

Irish Football

With Pete Carroll rumored to be going back to the NFL, likely to stay ahead of the crumbling USC Trojan empire, can you feel the college football tides shifting?

Will the 2010s be the decade the Irish really return to glory?

The Most Shocking Health Care Reform Post Ever

The Most Shocking Health Care Reform Post Ever

Did I get your attention?

So I have been thinking about health care reform lately. Can anybody really explain it?

Here are my thoughts on how to "reform" health care and before you start commenting, this is tongue in cheek--kind of.

1. Tier insurance premiums based on BMI If you are overweight and therefore more likely to require medical intervention you will pay an insurance premium that is noticeable. If you reduce your BMI to normal range than premiums go down.

Conversely, healthy people with normal BMI's pay a reduced insurance cost. This could be considered discrimination but human psychology shows that change only comes when people are either financially incented or negatively financially impacted.

2. Re-allocate health care spending to target prevention rather than treatment. Right now I think it is a 95/5 ratio. It should be more 40/60.

3. Start running Public Service Announcements aimed at Gen X and generations down at healthy eating and disease prevention. Mass market, sustained blanket coverage of why being healthy is a smart idea. My 5-year old already scolds me for running the water while I brush my teeth, why can't a healthy lifestyle be ingrained in kids? Start now. Go fast.

4. Require everyone eat an apple a day.

Seems simple enough, right?
